According to updated sales data shared by Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games and 2K, GTA 5 he finally reached the impressive roof of the 200 million copies sold worldwide as of March 31, 2024. The series as a whole is at altitude 425 million units.
GTA 5 was published way back in 2013 and practically kept players company for three console generations. In fact, the game first arrived on PS3 and Xbox 360, before returning with a polished version for PS4 and Xbox One in 2014, while the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were released in 2022. The PC version, however, is dated April 2015.
At the end of March 2023 GTA 5 had reached 180 million units sold, which means that approximately 20 million copies in one yeara result that many triple A films struggle to achieve in the first year of release, let alone more than ten years after publication.
It will be interesting to see if the next Grand Theft Auto will be able to repeat this success. By the way, just a few hours ago Take-Two revealed the official launch window for GTA 6, while 2K teased that it will unveil a new game in one of its biggest and most beloved series during next month’s Summer Game Fest.
The issues of Red Dead Redemption 2, Borderlands and the other major Take-Two series
In addition to the data relating to GTA 5, Take-Two also shared data from other titles in its portfolio, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, now at 64 million copies sold worldwide, and Borderlands 3, at 20 million. We have listed them below:
- GTA 5: 200 million copies (the entire GTA series has exceeded 425 million copies sold)
- Red Dead Redemption 2: 64 million units sold (the series sold 89 million copies)
- NBA 2K: 149 million copies sold
- BioShock (series): 43 million units sold
- Borderlands 3: 20 million copies sold, Borderlands 2 at 28 million (the entire series has exceeded 86 million units)
- Sid Meier’s Civilization (series): 71 million units sold
