Marc WhittenChief Product and Technology Officer of Unitywill step down from his role on June 1 and leave the company by the end of 2024. The news comes shortly after the announcement that CEO John Riccitiello will be replaced by Matthew Bromberg, former COO of Zynga and SVP of EA .
A document filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission revealed that Whitten will assume the role of strategic advisor to Unity from 1 June until the end of the year. Whitten’s resignation was not justified.
Whitten will have it anyway entitled to a series of benefits upon resignation, including a lump sum cash payment worth $200,000, equal to 26 weeks of his base salary. He will also receive another cash payment worth $400,000, equal to his 2024 target bonus under Unity’s cash incentive program, and an additional $200,000 lump sum for “supporting the leadership transition.” A “minor” payment of $14,801 will be provided to cover the cost of continuing health care.
Whitten’s previous experiences
Whitten is joined Unity in 2021 after working at Amazon as vice president of Entertainment Devices and Services. He left the company five months after making the Luna cloud gaming service available.
Previously it was Chief Product Officer of Xbox and left the company in 2014 to join audio technology company Sonos.
His departure comes after a long difficult period for Unity, which suffered enormous image damage after it unsuccessfully attempted to enforce a new rule for the use of the development engine: developers would have to pay a fee whenever a user had installed a game created with Unity. Of course, the gaming world revolted at the idea, and Unity eventually changed plans.
