The major social media apps on Android offer a wide range of tools for expressing your thoughts, such as stickers, avatars, emojis, and animated GIFs. However, the implementation of these features varies from app to app. Snapchat was one of the first to make the most of Bitmoji, while Meta’s WhatsApp introduced similar features just last year. Recently, beta testers discovered that WhatsApp is working on new autoplay settings for animations in chats. Currently, to view GIF, sticker and avatar animations on WhatsApp, you have to click on them, making the user experience less intuitive than services like Google Messages, which offer effortless full-screen reactions.
Digging into the Settings menu in WhatsApp beta 2.24.11.4, beta testers discovered a new toggle called “Autoplay Animated Images” located under Settings > Chats > Chat Settings. As the name suggests, the feature description makes it clear that this option will automatically animate emojis, stickers, and avatars as soon as they are sent or received, without the need for further action from the user. This setting can also be useful for those who prefer a less animated and cleaner experience, offering the ability to turn off autoplay with a single tap.
It is important to note that GIFs in conversations will not be affected by this setting once it is available to users. However, this autoplay toggle could be very useful considering that WhatsApp is planning to introduce animated emojis in an upcoming update. For now, both features are not yet available to those installing updates from the Play Store or App Store, so we’ll have to wait a little longer to see how they work.
