During the last fiscal year, which took place between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024, Square Enix gave us games like Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy VII Rebirthand Foamstars. This resulted in a 2.6% increase in game sales, but overall profits took a big hit. Thus, The Japanese company has revealed its plans for a “reboot”, which could mean that the exclusivity with PlayStation will come to an end.
Through its most recent financial report for the end of the fiscal year, Square Enix has revealed a 15.8% decrease in profits from its video game area, which means a significant operating loss of ¥8.1 billion yen, approximately $51.9 millions of dollars. To combat this, the company has revealed a three-year plan, known as Square Enix Reboots and Awakens, which is focused on long-term growth, where the company plans to bring its games to more platforms.
Specifically, Square Enix plans to shift to a cross-platform strategy, where They will bring their experiences to Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and PC consoles. Along with this, the company will focus on quality over quantity, this after they were criticized for the number of Final Fantasy games we saw in the last year.
While the details are not yet specific, this would mean that Something like Final Fantasy XVII either Kingdom Hearts 4 They would not be exclusive to PlayStation, and they would also arrive on PC and Xbox day one. Although it is likely that the last title in the trilogy of Final Fantasy VII Remake remains a PlayStation exclusive on consoles, it will surely also have a simultaneous launch with PC.
Regarding sales, Square Enix shared specific data about Final Fantasy XVIbut has remained silent about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, making it clear that this title failed to meet the sales expectations of the Japanese company, something that played a fundamental role in this new commercial strategy. With titles like Dragon Quest XII and Kingdom Hearts 4 On the horizon, it seems that it will not be long until we see this new direction for the Japanese company in action.
This is a decision that will not only benefit Square Enix, but it will give more people the opportunity to enjoy the company’s games. On related topics, you can check out our review of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth here. Likewise, this is our review of Foamstars.
Author’s Note:
This is a major change for Square Enix. Cross-platform development can bring with it a couple of problems when optimizing for each platform, but it is undeniable that the profits are much greater, and the company has made it clear that its exclusivity with PlayStation has not been as fruitful as they believe. I would have loved it.
