It’s been 10 years since the release of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the last great adventure of Nintendo’s primate. Although rumors have indicated that a new game by Retro Studios is on the way, at the moment there is no official information. What there is is a new report, which claims that Vicarious Visions was working on a Donkey Kong game before it was cancelled.
According to a report by DK Vine, which DidYouKnowGaming? expanded, The Donkey Kong game by Vicarious Visions was a 3D platformer, which would have a special mechanic focused on movement through vines. The title, reportedly codenamed “Freedom,” was in development for the Nintendo Switch before being canceled in 2016.
The report indicates that the project received the green light after the inclusion of Nintendo characters in Skylanders SuperChargerswhich impressed the Big N. After this, The Japanese company partnered with Vicarious Visions to work on a new Donkey Kong. It is mentioned here that Shigeru Miyamoto was very involved, providing feedback and suggestions on mechanics.
However, the game never advanced beyond the early stages and was worked on for approximately 6 months. The project ultimately failed, supposedly, because Activision diverted its focus from a wide catalog of titles and focused on Call of Duty almost exclusively.
The report notes that this caused Karthik and Guha Bala, the founders of Vicarious Visions, to leave the studio in 2016, to form Velan Studios, study that developed Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit. Unfortunately, at the moment there is no more official information.
Considering Vicarious Visions is now an independent studio, The possibility that Nintendo is interested in reviving this project is not ruled out, now without the interference of Activision. Author’s Note:
We need a new Donkey Kong game. The Country series are some of the best platformers out there, and it is a crime that in the last 10 years we have not seen a new game from this series.
