The resumption of spring days also encourages us to start again with outdoor sports, from running to walking, from cycling to trekking. Excellent health intentions, which however may also have contraindications or pitfalls to take into account. “The most frequent mistake is to overdo it, starting immediately with excessive loads after having been stationary for a long time, with the risk of suffering injuries and, therefore, a new forced rest. Gradualness is fundamental”, he explains to Adnkronos Health Gianfranco Beltrami, vice-president of the Italian Sports Federation (Fmsi), cardiologist, physiatrist and nutritionist.
The choice of discipline to practice depends “on a series of factors: age, health conditions of the person, state of training, any pathologies”, lists the expert. “For young, healthy people with no health problems, any activity can do.” Even for them, however, Beltrami specifies, “it is important to carry out a sports medicine examination, which certifies the absence of contraindications, which can also be seasonal, such as allergies. Up to now they have been felt little, given the rains Now, however, people allergic to grasses and pollen who arrive with the first warm weather may suffer the consequences”, symptoms that complicate outdoor physical activity. Other problems “could be linked to the back, the spine, or heart disease”.
For everyone, “in addition to gradualness – continues the specialist – the choice of non-polluted areas where you can do physical activity is also recommended. We know that physical activity involves an increase in ventilation, therefore an increase in the air that reaches the lungs. And if this is polluted, there is greater exposure to toxic substances. It is therefore necessary to choose areas less exposed to smog and at less busy times”. It is then necessary to avoid the central hours of the day, “especially when the sun’s rays are particularly intense, remembering to use sun cream to protect the skin from harmful rays”, concludes Beltrami, highlighting that “the choice of sport must take into consideration certainly one’s passion, but also the doctor’s advice: those with back problems should avoid running, those with prostate problems should avoid cycling. Furthermore, the duration and intensity of the exercises should be prescribed on the basis of a person’s personal characteristics overweight or obese, for example, will have to follow certain precautions and will not be able to overload the joints”.
