After the crisis that opened last week with the reflection of Pedro Sánchez, the slogan in Sumar is clear: “Give the pause content.” In the middle of the Catalan campaign, with darts directed at the PSC, the second vice president of the Government has demanded this Sunday that the head of the Executive take advantage of the Council of Ministers next Tuesday, the same day that marks seven months since the outbreak of the war in Gaza , to recognize the Palestinian State, one of the flags of the minority coalition partner, which fought to include it in the agreement with the socialists. “Let’s not let another day pass. There is no cause that justifies it,” stated the head of Labor in her second intervention in the race to support the head of the Comuns Sumar list, Jéssica Albiach, during a modest event at the Palau de Congresos in Tarragona in which He has also attacked the Hard Rock macrocasino project, located in the province, and whose controversy led to the electoral call.
Díaz’s visit culminates this Sunday an atypical week, at half throttle due to the holidays and the long weekend in Madrid and when Spanish politics is still digesting the result of Sánchez’s five-day break. The president announced on Monday that he continued to lead the Executive and that he would work for the “democratic regeneration” of the country. The crisis has helped Sumar to come out somewhat after difficult months in the coalition and put on the table the need to comply with the government agreement. In the middle of the Catalan race, even without being clear about the effects of the president’s latest move for Salvador Illa and the candidacy of the commons, the second vice president and the rest of the leaders of the space have dusted off old demands, such as the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary without the PP and the reform of the gag law, which failed in the last legislature due to the no of ERC and EH Bildu. Díaz returned to this proposal at the rally. “When we say that there is lawfare [judicialización de la política], that they are persecuting us, that there is an absolutely vile and destructive opposition, we also say that public liberties are being attacked, it is time to repeal the gag law,” he justified, distancing himself from Sánchez. “It is good that the President of the Government has stopped, we work so that people can stop, live with dignity, reduce the working day… Now we must provide this pause with content. They have voted for us to govern better, to gain rights, not just to stop the right,” he stressed, urging the president.
Sumar sources add that what happened these days “opens a new situation.” “The first tension is between the full stop and the full stop. “Between continuing to redistribute power or thinking that this situation is addressed by changing the tones of politics,” they insist on the party leadership, where they doubt the effect that Sánchez’s decision may have at the polls.
Both Díaz’s formation and the vice president herself come to these elections in a very different context than that of Galicia or Euskadi. Catalunya en Comú, even after the break with Podemos – which is not present at this event – has a consolidated political space and although some surveys project a slight decline from the current eight deputies, it is the reference brand in Catalonia. For this reason, the head of Labor has practically nothing at stake in these elections, although a good result would put her in a better position for the European elections that will be held in just five weeks. The most involved of all the national leaders is the spokesperson for the formation, Ernest Urtasun, also a member of the commons, whom the leader defended this Sunday against criticism for the Ministry of Culture’s initiative to eliminate the National Bullfighting Award. “Bulls are a form of animal abuse,” he stated.
Sumar sources also assure that the commons are the “guarantee” that there can be a progressive Government in the community that is committed to public services and the ecological transition in the face of a “predatory” development model and warn of a possible Illa agreement with the party of former president Carles Puigdemont.
The defense of the referendum, once a central element of the space’s discourse, has been left aside in Albiach’s campaign, which with a strong presence of the former mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, now talks about reinforcing self-government, tries to capitalize on the environmentalist vote and Above all, it waves the social flag to differentiate itself from a strong PSC in a contest very focused on the dispute between the Socialists and Junts and in which they recognize that it is difficult for them to enter. “When we say that we are going to locate 1,300 slot machines in Tarragona, is this a country project? I ask the PSC for coherence,” Díaz questioned very harshly, who has highlighted the contradiction of the socialists in having opposed the failed Eurovegas in Madrid. “Even Felipe González positioned himself against this barbarity and here the PSC is leading a proposal that is failed, outdated, aggressive and incorrect,” the vice president charged, just one week before the polls open in Catalonia.
