The all-against-all phase of the 2024-I League ended in the midst of many referee controversies, complaints, possible vetoes of judges and even threats of not showing up for matches in protest of the low level.
It should be remembered that the work of the judges does not depend on Dimayor, but on an independent entity, the National Arbitration Commission, which responds directly to the Colombian Football Federation.
And although its president, Ramón Jesurún, assures that never before have the referees had so much preparation, the complaints do not stop and many question the work of Imer Machado, who is in charge of the Technical Arbitration Commission.
How much have the judges failed this semester? EL TIEMPO made an analysis of all the refereeing errors, based, first, on the match notes and then comparing them with the analysis carried out, week after week, by two former referees, José Borda and Wílmer Barahona. The result was a list of 24 clear and manifest errors, which was then sent to Borda for a second review.
How the review was done
Failures related to disciplinary aspects (omitted or wrong expulsions) are not included in this compilation, unless they directly affected a goal-scoring action, such as, for example, Diego Novoa’s unsanctioned penalty in the Millonarios vs. Cali or Leyser Chaverra’s elbow in the play prior to a Medellín goal.
The graph that accompanies these lines shows which were the teams most affected by referee errors, which were the ones that had the most errors in their favor, which were the referees and those in charge of the VAR who made the most mistakes and a table of positions projected from of what the results would have been if the wrong decisions had not occurred.
Delgado, however, continues to be highly regarded by the Referee Commission, to the point that shortly after what happened at the Hernán Ramírez Villegas, he was designated to whistle a friendly for the Colombian U-17 National Team against South Africa.
This Saturday a new Colombian soccer semifinal begins. I hope the level of refereeing improves.
