Within the Security Council of the United Nations (UN), Mexico reaffirmed its commitment to the search for a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict in the Middle East, with special emphasis on the situation in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian question.
The permanent representative of Mexico to the UN, Héctor Vasconcelos y Cruz, led the intervention of the Mexican delegation in the open debate on this delicate problem, which continues to challenge international efforts to achieve stability in the region.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that since the beginning of the escalation of violence in the Gaza StripMexico has maintained a firm position in favor of the cessation of hostilities and respect for the human rights of the civilian population.
In his speech, Vasconcelos and Cruz reiterated the call to all parties involved to definitively and permanently stop indiscriminate attacks, especially those directed against civilians, medical and humanitarian personnel.
The position of Mexico is framed in support for a comprehensive solution to the conflict, based on the two-state principle and the recognition of Israel's legitimate security concerns, as well as the aspiration for Palestine to become a State fully recognized by the international community.
“It is essential to move towards a solution that guarantees peaceful coexistence and prosperity for both parties,” Vasconcelos y Cruz emphasized.
The permanent representative regretted the recent setback suffered by Palestine on its path to full membership in the UN, when the draft resolution presented to the Security Council did not achieve the necessary support due to the veto exercised by the United States.
“It is disappointing that the international community has not been able to advance on this crucial issue for regional stability,” he commented.
Mexico, for its part, has consistently supported the efforts of Palestine to obtain broader international recognition.
Recalling the historic resolution 67/19 of the UN General Assembly of November 29, 2012, in which Palestine was recognized as a non-member observer state of the organization, Vasconcelos y Cruz underlined Mexico's continued commitment to the Palestinian cause .
“It is time to redouble our efforts and work together for peace and justice in the Middle East,” concluded the Mexican representative.
