Talladega does not disappoint
The tenth round of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series took place on one of the iconic tracks of American motorsport: the Talladega superspeedway. As always, the Alabama circuit – the fastest on the entire NASCAR calendar – did not disappoint expectations, delivering the classic race expected from this type of track: many changes at the top, a sprint for the victory and – obviously – accidents. The winner was, for the first time in his career on this track, Tyler Reddickbearer of Toyota and the 23XI team, which has among its owners the NBA legend Michael Jordan, present on the circuit yesterday.
Sprint and chaos
In the final rush, at the end of 188 laps in total 72 leadership changes occurred between 23 different drivers, the 28-year-old Californian preceded the Fords of Brad Keselowski and Noah Gragson. However, the real protagonist – for better or for worse – of the race finale was Michael McDowell, also standard bearer of the oval house. Over the last 27 laps, the Front Row team driver tried to maintain the lead of the race in every way, continually closing between the inside and outside lines and practically never leaving the head of the group. At the end, however, he exaggerated with the sudden changes in trajectory and in an attempt to block Keselowski's overtaking attempt at all costs, he turned at over 300 km/h on the main straight, triggering a huge accident involving more than half the group – the classic 'big one' – and opened the doors to success for Reddick, quick to take advantage of Keselowski's inevitable slowdown in front of him.
How scary for Lajoie
In the series of chain contacts that broke out on the finish line, the poor man was the one who got the worst of it Corey Lajoiewhose Chevrolet went airborne, overturning and crossing the finish line 'literally' on its side. Before the final rush that saw him triumph, Reddick had also escaped unscathed from another frightening accident involving the Toyota group, which at that moment in the race had just returned to the pits and was trying to gain an advantage over the main group. A sketchy Bubba Wallace bumb has Erik Jones' car was sent head-on into the wall at over 300 km/h, who was then taken to hospital for checks after experiencing severe pain in his back. It is therefore prolonged Ford's winless streak, which reached 11 also considering the end of the last championship. Little consolation for the oval house is the victory of the two stages signed by Austin Cindric and Joey Logano, both standard bearers of the Penske team.
