New discussion points system
In Formula 1, next to the present we always think about possible scenarios for the future. At the moment a new discussion is taking place, this time relating to points award system. Excluding the Sprints and focusing on the 'classic' race, points have been awarded to the top 10 finishers since 2010, with the addition of the bonus point for the fastest lap since 2019, which however is only awarded if it was achieved by a driver already present in the top-10. Now, however, the team managers are apparently considering a expansion of the points zone to the first 12 drivers to reach the finish line.
Objective: to reward 'minor' teams
There clear division emerged at this start of the championship Between the top five teams of the grid (Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin) compared to the others means that often for the other teams only crumbs remain available and, in the case of a race without retirements for the top teams, not even those. The injustice, however, is that in this way a team that finishes the races with its drivers in 11th and 12th position receives the same points – zero – as those who are perhaps permanently at the back of the grid. The expansion of the points area would only concern positions from eighth onwardstherefore not affecting the battles at the top.
Vasseur agrees
Among those in favor of this new assignment of points is also the Ferrari team principal, Frederic Vasseurwhich he demonstrated support small teams in their battle. “Are you aiming for the top 12? I'm in favor of it, I'm absolutely not against it and coming from Alfa Romeo I perfectly understand the frustration that sometimes you feel when you have a mega weekend and maybe, if there isn't a retirement in front of you, you finish 11th – explained the French manager – in that case the reward for your hard work is zero. Whether you finish the race 11th or last is the same and I can understand the frustration that comes with this. You could say that by doing this it would be the same for those who finish 13th, it's something to be defined, but I'm not against it.”concluded Vasseur.
