The oldest marathon in the world, the Boston Marathon, has brought together thousands of experts and intrepid runners from all over the world since 1897. The great party held this week included the participation of two people from Cartagena, Diego Martínez and Carlos Ortiz, who proudly carried the name of the city six thousand kilometers from home.
The two runners belong to Cuatro Santos Cartagena, a club that since its creation in 2017 has a marked international and traveling character. Some of its members, led by Diego Martínez himself as president, usually pack their bags to complete the world's great marathons: those in Chicago, Boston, New York, Berlin, London and Tokyo, as well as others such as Liverpool, Munich and Amsterdam.
«We ran the Boston one with one objective: to achieve a milestone for Cartagena, which would be to complete the six largest marathons in the world. I have completed 27 marathons. I only need Tokyo, which if possible I will do in 2025,” explains Ortiz, 59, an Efesé fan and worker at La Manga Club. It took 5 hours and 24 minutes.
His partner Ortiz, a 60-year-old lawyer, has completed 50 marathons and qualified for Boston by achieving the minimum mark (3 hours and 35 minutes) in Prague. With a time of 3 hours and 20 minutes in Boston, he is missing Tokyo and Chicago to complete the six 'majors'. «It is a spectacular experience. And the route, a leg-breaker,” they explain.
