The US agency explained that the woman, whose identity will remain reserved, suffered serious lead poisoning. This heavy metal was found in hemorrhoid ointment called Cao Bôi Trĩ Cây Thầu Dầu (castor oil hemorrhoid extract) that came from Vietnam.
According to the CDPH, the woman purchased the product through Facebook and a family member who was in Vietnam shipped it to the United States. When testing the product, they discovered that 4% of the content was lead; that is, 39 thousand parts per million (ppm).
This amount of lead is dangerous for people's health, because when it is absorbed through the skin, poisoning symptoms such as fatigue, irritability, smoke changes, difficulty concentrating and sleeping problems develop.
“While some people may be asymptomatic, others may experience symptoms,” the California Department of Public Health said.
Regarding moderate symptoms due to lead exposure, there are: muscle and joint pain, nausea, decreased appetite, stomach cramps, constipation and diarrhea, feeling tired or drowsy, headache, tremor.
Serious symptoms of lead poisoning include severe stomach pain, tingling, burning, or numbness in the hands, seizures, coma, or death.
When this case became known, the health authorities of the state of California urged the population not to consume hemorrhoid ointment from Vietnam called Cao Bôi Trĩ Cây Thầu Dầu. If you have it, ask to stop using it immediately to avoid putting your health at risk.
