Intel is betting everything on artificial intelligence and the next generation of mobile CPUs will help consolidate the American giant's position on the market.
After launching the first generation of NPU alongside the Meteor Lake range, the Californian company is preparing for the arrival of the Arrow Lake chips and Lunar Lake: the latter will bring a dowry generational leap on the AI front. Let's find out the details provided by Intel.
AI performance above the TOP 100
During the Vision 2024 event, Intel showcased some specifications and related performance related to the artificial intelligence of the Lunar Lake CPUs, which will be called Intel Core Ultra 200.
The processors include configurations of up to 8 cores and will be equipped with “Lion Cove” P-Core and “Skymont” E-Core, all accompanied by Battlemage Xe2 iGPUs and LPDDR5 memories. On the AI front, the Lunar Lake CPUs will sport a new NPU which, according to Intel's statements, will be up to three times faster than current solutions: Core Ultra 200 chips will indeed deliver more than 100 TOPS of power, with a rather high leap compared to the current generation, given that the Meteor Lake range stops at 30/35 TOP. It should be underlined that the figure proposed by the blue house simultaneously includes CPU, GPU and NPU.
The NPU, for its part, will offer around 45 TOPS, while the rest of the power will be provided by the new generation integrated Battlemage GPUs.
A direct comparison
It may be useful to compare Intel's numbers with those declared by other manufacturers such as Qualcomm and AMD: for its Snapdragon X Elitethe competitor has in fact spoken of over 75 TOPS, while AMD has gone up to 100 TOPS for the range of Strix Point processors. Again the figures are combined.
In short, at least on the mobility side, the path seems clear and the large manufacturers are concentrating their efforts on the development of increasingly high-performance NPUs. As we mentioned, Intel is also busy on the GPU front and the new Battlemage Xe2 graphics cards could arrive by the end of the year.
