The relationship between pigeons and people in squares is something that has existed for a long time, but perceptions and regulations can differ widely according to culture and local regulations.
However, in Colombia, the Animal Protection and Welfare District called to avoid feeding the pigeonssince this habit encourages overpopulation and brings with it harmful effects on public health.
On the other side of the world, a similar call was made by the Government of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. However, while in Colombia it was just a request, in the European region it became a mandate.
A few days ago, two residents were sanctioned by the area of Strategic Planning, Environmental Sustainability and Public Services of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, with a fine of a thousand euros each, equivalent to more than 4 million Colombian pesos, for feeding pigeons in the streetviolating a local ordinance that considers this act as a serious offense.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasized that feeding animals in public spaces it's disrespectful towards other citizens, contributes to public health problems and the deterioration of heritage.
Carlos Tarife, councilor of the area, explained that the act of feeding pigeons causes an uncontrollable increase in its population and the disease transmissionin addition to causing damage to architectural heritage and urban furniture due to their excrement and the construction of nests.
The municipal administration is implementing measures to control the population of pigeons and warns that it will continue to apply sanctions to prevent the accumulation of food waste in the streets and the attraction of pests such as rats and cockroaches.
