General Roberto Vannacci gave an interview to Claudio Sabelli Fioretti, published in the newspaper La Repubblica, in which he returns to talk about his positions on homosexuality. The soldier – investigated for fraud, embezzlement and incitement to racial hatred and suspended from service for 11 months – is about to publish a new book, entitled Courage wins (Piemme) after the great success of his first work The world in reverse (self-produced).
In the interview Vannacci says that initially The world in reverse, released on August 13, 2023, was selling only twenty copies a day. Then, after the controversy aroused by Matteo Pucciarelli's articles on Republic and by Aldo Cazzullo on Corriere della Serabegan to grind until it reached 17,800 copies sold in a single day and 100 thousand in the space of a week.
One of the most contested passages of that book is “Dear homosexuals, you are not normal, get over it…”. The general defends himself like this: “I have never used offensive words. In dictionaries, normality is defined in an exclusively statistical sense. What is not exceptional is normal.” “The most recent statistic – he adds – says that 3.4 percent of the population does not recognize heterosexuality. The others are normal.”
Despite that 3.4 percent, Vannacci further observes, “to get a film on Netflix you have to put gays in it.” “And the presenters? Malgioglio, Signorini, Platinette… Out of twenty presenters – continues the soldier – at least ten are gay. I think some even pretend to be one to appear on the screen.”
And again: “It doesn't bother me that a man loves another man. Or that a woman loves another woman. What I can't stand is ostentation. Women don't show off. Men, on the other hand, sometimes sound feminine, move their hips and dress like women. Mengoni with the skirt makes you laugh. As if I were walking around in a bra. Or showing off my hairy legs.”
“Do you know gays?” asks Sabelli Fioretti. “Few”, replies the general, “but I know many people who, out of curiosity or on a whim, have tried it once, twice, three times”. “I have been on testosterone since I was born,” he specifies. “I played with guns when I was two years old. I was very 'masculine'. Like my daughters they are very 'girly'. I tried to orient them towards heterosexuality. But I would always support them. The role of parents is to support their children.”
Vannacci explains that he has been a guest on several right-wing talk shows, from Mario Giordano to Paolo Del Debbio and Giuseppe Brindisi. But, he adds, “I also went to Bianca Berlinguer. But I don't like it, she tends to prevaricate”. Lilli Gruber “invited me. I didn't go there. I don't even go to Formigli. I don't like fuss.”
Fiorello, on the other hand, “is very nice. How Crozza takes the piss out of me from morning to night. But he amuses me.” Fabio Fazio? “I would go even if I dislike him. But he doesn't invite me.”
“They classified me as right-wing” but “I don't know why”, reflects Vannacci, who defines himself as “traditionalist and conservative”, “revolutionary” and “innovative. But framed in tradition, in roots, in identity”. “They told me I could be the new Chávez,” he says.
The interviewer then asks if it is true that negotiations are underway with Matteo Salvini's League for a candidacy in the European elections. “I'm not negotiating. I haven't decided anything”, specifies the general.
