The choice of Shell Of close petrol stations and transforming traditional service stations into charging stations for electric cars is leaving many motorists astonished and is part of the program “Net zero emissions target” to accelerate the transition towards electric mobility.
In Shell practice will gradually eliminate a large part of the pumps that deliver petrol, diesel and gas to replace them with charging stations for fast, direct current electric cars Ultra-fast And Hypercharger.
The multinational oil company focuses on electric cars enough to announce the closure of around a thousand fuel stations by 2025to focus on the development of charging stations for electric vehicles. The plan, outlined in the latest report Energy Transition Strategyforesees the closure of 500 traditional fuel sales sites in 2024 and 500 during 2025, where the traditional pumps for dispensing petrol, diesel and LPG will be replaced by fast DC charging stations.
Shell electric charging stations
Shell's stated goal is to install 200,000 charging points of electricity for electric cars by 2030, compared to approximately 54,000 currently already active. The new charging points for electric cars will be located inside the fuel distributors petrol, diesel, LPG and methane currently in operation.
Where?
The multinational did not provide details on the location of petrol stations that will be closed in the coming years, but it is likely that the China is the first to be interested, followed byEurope. China, in particular, it is the most active market for electric carswith increasing competition among local automakers.
Shell is focusing everything on green with renewable energy and electric charging stations
The oil multinational has started installing charging points for electric cars a few years ago, also offering a charging service roaming to activate stalls of other suppliers. Furthermore, it collaborates with the Chinese automaker BYD to provide dedicated subscriptions to the brand's Chinese and European customers.
Shell is also investing in reduction of CO₂ emissions linked to its core fossil fuel business, with the aim of halve emissions by 2030 compared to 2016, and said it had achieved 60% of this goal by the end of 2023, renewing its commitment to climate neutrality by 2050.
What Shell says about this
“Our Annual oil production peaked in 2019 and we expect our total production to decline 1-2% per year through 2030. We are investing approximately $1 billion each year in low-carbon energy such as charging for electric vehicles, hydrogen, biofuels and electricity generated from solar and wind energy. We intend to grow our investment to approximately $2 billion per year, as long as profitable business opportunities arise.
Reaching our goal by 2030 means providing enough renewable energy for 50 million homes, manage over 2.5 million charging points for electric vehicles, produce eight times more low-carbon fuels and increase the amount of biofuels and hydrogen in the transport fuels we sell to 10%, from the current 3%. We work with customers, companies and others to manage emissions, including operators in the hardest-to-decarbonise sectors such as aviation, shipping, road transport and industry. Collaboration with other actors includes supporting government policies to reduce carbon emissions, sector by sector. We will continue to drive innovation to deliver the cleaner energy our customers need.
Addressing climate change is an urgent challenge. We will contribute to a world with net zero emissions, in which society does not increase the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. That's why we've set a goal to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050, aligned with society and our customers. This supports the most ambitious goal to tackle climate change set out in the United Nations Paris Agreement: to limit the increase in average global temperatures to 1.5°C.”
