Why did Paisana Jacinta disappear from Peruvian television?
The Countrywoman Jacinta, created and performed by Jorge Benavides, disappeared from Peruvian television after a series of legal and social controversies. The main reason behind her departure from the small screen was a protection action filed by various institutions, which argued that the character promoted and reinforced negative and discriminatory stereotypes towards indigenous Andean women. In that sense, they pointed out that Benavides represented her in a vulgar, violent manner and with little intellectual capacity.
As a result, the Superior Court of Justice of Cusco ruled against the broadcast of the program and ordered that Jorge Benavides and Frecuencia Latina (now known as Latina Televisión) refrain from broadcasting any content related to Paisana Jacinta that could violate the rights to human dignity, equality and non-discrimination of the Andean women.
The court decision also included a ban on disseminating the program and any similar content on all platforms, including social networks such as YouTube and Facebook.

Constitutional Court will now decide if Paisana Jacinta returns to TV
This Monday, March 4, Jorge Benavides said that now the constitutional Court will determine whether the character of La Paisana Jacinta will be able to appear again on Peruvian television. Through his Instagram account, the comedian shared a statement.
“An injustice was committed with my character by removing him from the screens. They violated my right to freedom of artistic expression…I do not belong to any party, neither right nor left. I have never been interested in those topics, and for the same reason, I did not know what was moving behind Justice in our Country. At the end of the process that ordered the departure of La Paisana from television and networks, I just found out that the IDL was behind all this…” Jorge said at the beginning.
“What no one knew is that La Paisana has been silently seeking justice. After four years of struggle I want to inform all my followers that The case of La Paisana is already in the Constitutional Court and is now in the hands of these illustrious lawyers, its return which by law corresponds to me. I hope that the wisdom of the judges will remove the chains from my freedom of artistic expression and return because to this day it is claimed by many,” Benavides added.
