Ordinary filling of the treasury? The increase in traffic fines is under discussion.
Traffic fines increase every year. You might say that you shouldn't drive too fast or through red lights. Yet the Netherlands is the leader in fine amounts. The Ministry of Justice and Security does not care and continues to increase the fines. Even though resistance is growing, even police officers have sounded the alarm in the past.
The discussion about increasing traffic fines has now reached the House of Representatives. It is Denk who is now sounding the alarm with a motion. In January, the fine amounts were increased by 10 percent. It is no longer about road safety, but the government must finalize the budget. So ordinary grabbing. That rubs the political party the wrong way.
Motion by Denk
And not just Denk. A majority of the House of Representatives supports the motion to reverse the increase in traffic fines. Not in its entirety, but by 4.3 percent. The motion was supported by PVV, BBB, Forum for Democracy, JA21, SP, GroenLinks-PvdA and Denk.
That 4.3 percent is based on advice from the Council of State. Now the fines have been increased by 10 percent. 4.3 percent is to cover the budget and another 5.7 percent for the annual indexation.
Filling the state coffers
Denk MP El Abassi states that fines have been created to promote road safety and must be proportionate to the nature and seriousness of the violation. In the past it has already been shown that it is now 'cheaper' to abuse someone than to hold a phone in your hand while driving. Fine-wise then. The proportions are becoming increasingly skewed.
It is now up to outgoing Minister Yesilgöz of Justice and Security to respond. Adopting a motion does not mean that the outgoing cabinet will immediately implement the wish. A future cabinet already has its fair share of challenges in the field of finance.
