This Saturday (10), the Israel Defense Forces announced the discovery of a 700-meter-long network of tunnels partially beneath the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA), in the city of Gaza. This would reinforce the suspicion of the use of the main local humanitarian aid agency by Hamas terrorists.
Offices, weapons, ammunition, a computer server chamber and a room with stacks of industrial batteries would have been found. Apparently, the place was evacuated with the advance of Israeli troops.
Other side
UNWRA released a statement saying that it vacated the headquarters in question on October 12, five days after the start of the war, and that it could therefore not confirm or comment on the discovery.
It also highlighted that it does not have the military capacity to carry out inspections of its facilities and that whenever a cavity was found near or under the headquarters, the agency promptly wrote letters of protest to both Gaza and Israeli authorities.
Furthermore, Palestinians accuse Israel of spreading false information about UNRWA, which also runs schools, health clinics and other services.
