James Cameron already has plans Avatar 6 and 7. In case you had any doubts, we remind you that at the moment only the second film has arrived in cinemas.
Speaking to People, Cameron revealed that he already had a vision for these films, but he admitted that he may not direct them himself, because “mortality makes itself felt”. Avatar 3 is scheduled for 2025, Avatar 4 for 2029, and Avatar 5 for 2031, which means Avatar 6 and 7 won't come out until the mid-2030s at best.
“We have a complete script up to the fifth film and I have ideas for the sixth and seventh, although I'll probably pass the baton at that point,” Cameron said. “I mean, mortality takes its toll. But we're enjoying what we're doing. We like it. We work with great people.”
Avatar must become a cinematic universe like Star Wars
Cameron also made it clear that he wants that Avatar becomes a cinematic universe similar to other sci-fi epics. “Star Trek, Star Wars, the franchises that create big worlds that have been around since I was a child, have been my inspiration,” she said. “We're still a young universe. We're only two films in and halfway through the third. To have that kind of cultural impact over time, you have to put all your heart and energy into it.”
The Avatar universe has already expanded beyond the films as well, as the video game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was released in 2023, even incorporating elements from the third film.
