You have to be willing to do something if you want to be a real purist.
The BMW Z4 is a fairly unique offering today. Unfortunately, we have lost our direct competitors – the Mercedes SLK/SLC and the Audi TT. The roadster therefore seems to be a dying breed. A manual roadster certainly is. Yet BMW is still coming with a manual version of the Z4, as we were able to report on Wednesday.
That was of course good news, but there is also bad news. You immediately have to buy the most expensive version of the Z4 to take. Now it is no punishment to have to choose the M40i, but you are also stuck with a Pure Impulse package.
The Pure Impulse package includes the Shadow Line trim, black mirror caps, red brake calipers, LM double-spoke wheels in 19 and 20 inches, the color Frozen Deep Green and cognac leather. Not bad in itself, but if you don't want a Shadow Line, for example, you won't get a manual transmission either.
Because of all this, the starting price increases considerably: for a manual Z4 you have to at least €110,033 pay. That's something to swallow… The Z4 with manual gearbox is almost €16,000 more expensive than the Z4 M40i with automatic transmission. Which isn't a bargain either.
You can still customize the Pure Impulse package to your own taste. For example, the undersigned has replaced the matte green (Frozen Deep Green) with metallic green (Sanremo Grun Metallic) and the diamond sh*t cut rims exchanged for rims in Cerium Grau.
Competition
We already mentioned the competitors that have disappeared, but there is still one rival left: the Porsche 718 Boxster. Although it was built according to a completely different recipe, it is nevertheless a direct competitor.
The Boxster (standard with manual gearbox) is slightly more expensive, with a starting price of €113,517. And then you have a bare Boxster with a four-cylinder. If you want a Boxster with a six-cylinder, you have to get the GTS, and that will set you back €160,459. Compared to the competition, the price of the Z4 is not too bad…
