The American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, congratulated this Monday (5) the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, on his re-election, emphasizing the need to respect human rights and judicial guarantees, issues criticized by international organizations since the establishment of the state of exception that drastically reduced the rates of violence in the Central American country.
“I congratulate Nayib Bukele on his electoral victory as president of El Salvador. The United States praises the work of the election observers and looks forward to working with the president-elect,” said the head of American diplomacy.
Blinken commented that US priorities in the relationship with El Salvador will be “good governance, economic prosperity, fair trial guarantees and human rights.” The Washington government, according to Blinken, values the “strong relationship” with the people of El Salvador, “built over 160 years based on shared values, regional ties and family connections.”
“Developments in El Salvador have a direct impact on U.S. interests at home and abroad. Only by working together can we reach our full potential and overcome the greatest obstacles in our hemisphere and globally,” said Blinken.
On Sunday night (4), Bukele declared himself the winner of the elections before the results were officially released by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) due to technical problems.
With 70.25% of the count processed in the body's preliminary count, Bukele has 1,662,313 votes, followed distantly by the Farabundo Martí Front for National Liberation (FMLN, left-wing), with 139,025 votes, and by the National Republican Alliance (Arena , right-wing), with 122,926 votes.
These results must be ratified in a final investigation with physical minutes, a process that takes several days.
If confirmed, Bukele will become the first president of El Salvador to be re-elected and the majority in Congress will allow him to continue his war against criminal groups through an exception regime, implemented in March 2022. (With EFE Agency)
