The superstar of Italian football found himself in the middle of a scandal.
Olympique Marseille's Italian head coach Gennaro Gattuso and his family have been targeted by the criminal organization 'Ndrangheta. Told about it Il Messagero magazine.
According to the newspaper, the family's well-being has been threatened, and in addition, two of Gattuso's sister's cars have been burned.
The thread started when Gattuso's father Francesco Gattuso applied for support from the Italian government to build a large solar panel complex on his property. He needed about 80,000 euros in funding for that.
The 'Ndranghe demanded money from Gattuso in order to give “permission” to implement the project. To push its claim, it burned Gattuso's sister's car on two separate occasions, the first in October and the second in December.
According to Il Messagero's official sources, Gennaro Gattuso then decided to give in to the mafia men's demands and paid them the amount of 3,000 euros they demanded.
In the end, the police managed to arrest two members of the criminal organization for extortion.
The 'Ndrangheta is one of Italy's oldest mafia organizations and operates mainly in the Calabria region of southern Italy. Its operation began in the 19th century.
46 years old Gattuso traditionally started as head coach of Marseille last September. Eight different stops fit into his more than 10-year coaching career.
Gattuso is better remembered for his playing career, especially for AC Milan and the Italian national team shirt. Gattuso, who played 73 international matches, was one of Italy's most important players in the 2006 World Cup gold team.
He represented Milan for more than a decade and won two Italian championships and the Champions League as many times during that time.
