The project continues
On the possibility that the stable Andretti Global, managed by Michael Andretti and the famous American family, will actually enter Formula 1, serious doubts still persist. The team is at the center of a political battle between the FIA (which has already expressed itself favorably) and F1with at least eight out of ten teams and the top of the category showing themselves rather doubtful about the hypothesis of an expansion of the starting field.
The stars and stripes team, however, does not seem to be disturbed by the controversies that are developing on this side of the ocean and is proceeding withsetting up a team that can regularly compete in the Circus. The goal is to be ready if the doors to the championship could actually open. For this reason, a head of the technical department was also appointed, Nick Chester.
First wind tunnel tests
The British engineer, who worked for a long time for Renault in F1 and who comes from experiences in Formula E with Mercedes and McLaren, spoke to the site The Atlantic, appearing rather confident about the development of the Andretti project. To give an idea of how much effort the US team is making, just think that a mid-2024 is expected to take place – in the Toyota wind tunnel in Cologne – a crucial test of a 1:1 scale Formula 1 chassis prototype.
Chester also pointed out how Andretti is trying to recruit brilliant minds with a past at high levels in the Circus. “Andretti is a team that wants to do things right and wants to win – said Chester – I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to attract people to the project. The name Andretti represents a real attraction. We had people coming from Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren. Everyone wanted a new challenge“.
Support from General Motors
The former Renault technical director also confirmed that Generl Motors' commitment to the project is realregardless of the American group's desire to create its own power unit starting from 2028.”Without GM's involvement we would not have been able to do half of what we have done now” Chester confirmed. The Andretti team is currently operational with around 120 people at Silverstone, in addition to 50 people dedicated to the project by GM itself.
