“It's alive…”. She's alive. McLaren revealed this afternoon that it had turned on the Mercedes engine of its new single-seater, the MCL38 with which it will take part in the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship.
The team directed by Andrea Stella spread the news via a short video – in reality only audio, no image other than the orange team logo on a black background which imitates the sound vibrations as the decibels of the Mercedes hybrid V6 increase – of duration of 16 seconds.
An engine in neutral, at least at the beginning, which after 7 seconds is pushed slightly, making the roar heard – as much as possible given the characteristics of the hybrid power units – of the heart made in Brixworth which will also equip the papaya-coloured single-seaters this year and black.
This is a second preview of the MCL38, the name of the new single-seater which will be entrusted to Lando Norris and Oscari Piastri, after the presentation of the 2024 livery which took place a few days ago. This explains the two colours, black and papaya, without the presence of the blue which found its place on the fairings of the McLarens until the end of 2023.
The MCL38 will be presented among the last, that is, on Valentine's Day, February 14th. On the same day the veils will fall from the Mercedes W15 of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. A very intense lovers' day for those in love with the top open-wheel series of Motorsport.
Furthermore, a few days ago, McLaren also decided to remove Lando Norris from the market. After numerous sirens that wanted the British driver sought by Red Bull Racing, the Woking team further extended the agreement with Norris which would in any case expire at the end of 2025. An excellent way to lay the foundations for a future that will have to follow what good done in the second half of 2023.
Expectations regarding McLaren are higher every year and the possibility of using new facilities, together with the new staff arriving at the McLaren Technology Centre, only makes the team among those most observed at the beginning of the season. And this can only please Zak Brown and Andrea Stella, authors of McLaren's recovery which in 2023 finished as the second performance force in Formula 1.
