One step presentation
The event is ever closer: according to what was declared by the main Spanish media in recent days, Tuesday 27 January the presentation ceremony of the Madrid Grand Prix will be held, which from 2026 or 2027 will replace Barcelona as the only Formula 1 World Championship event present in Spain. The date of the first edition still remains to be clarified due to the contract that links the Catalan circuit to F1, valid until 2026 included.
The return to the capital
In this way, Madrid will conclude a long project linked to the return of Circuswhich would return to the Spanish capital for the first time since 1981. In that year, in fact, the last edition of the Iberian GP was held on the permanent circuit of Jarama, located near Madrid and home to race weekends from 1968 to 1981, albeit with some interruptions. The new circuit, however, will be semi-urban.
No influence on Barcelona
The ribbon cutting scheduled for Tuesday will obviously see the presence of Isabel Diaz Ayusothat is, the President of the Community of Madrid. Even before the event, Ayuso wanted to underline that Madrid's candidacy and role did not directly influence Barcelona's possible exit from the scene: “Whether Formula 1 leaves Barcelona or not has nothing to do with Madrid – declared a El Mundo – if an event is in danger at a given moment, I prefer that he can remain in Madrid or another Spanish region before he leaves the country. I hope that others know how to be happy for Madrid, because we too have the right to receive investments, even if the Government doesn't help us“.
Clashes with the opposition
In addition, Ayuso highlighted the lack of Government support in the negotiation period between Madrid and Liberty Media, as well as highlighting the tense relations with the opposition: “We have already reached a point where I am not even asking the Government for help, but simply to leave the Community of Madrid alone – he added – the Government knows this because there are many people who participate in negotiations of this type, but I didn't see the slightest interest on their part in supporting us. Relations between the two administrations are not at their best at the moment. I guess they want to smear it because that's what they did when we built the M-30 (highway that surrounds the capital, ed.), when we brought bilingual teachers into public education, when we opened the best pandemic hospital in the world while people were dying. In other words, nothing. Something good happened that pleased the Madrid team.”
