Michael Schumacher's son seems to miss some of the Kampfgeist that made his father such an inveterate multiple winner.
There is a nice television fragment in which we see Jos and Recordmeister Michael Schumacher as new fathers talk about the future. The future of their sons, that is. Der Michael indicates 'that will be something, we have never had a disagreement so far, but if those two start fighting against each other…'. Jos answers 'yes, that would be nice, but Formula 1 is of course very far away. I also think it would be nice if he plays football or tennis.'
We now know what the future brought. The two youngsters actually both reached F1. Only Max is the new Michael. And Mick is closer to Jos. Especially if he makes a comeback, as Jos did several times. But in principle that is not possible next year for the amiable (huh?) German. After a year on the sidelines, Mick has opted for an adventure in the WEC at Alpine. Perhaps that is why he celebrated the New Year with Esteban Ocon and some other sharply dressed young people.
Mick will continue his duties at Alpine to combine with the reserve role at Mercedes. But he will only come into action there if Lewis or George get injured. Or perhaps so frustrated with the W15 that they no longer feel like using it. You never know how things will turn out. Yet Mick seems to have resigned himself to the situation. And perhaps rightly so.
The German was unlucky at Haas F1 when Putin invaded Ukraine. As a result, he no longer had Mazepin next to him, who, thanks to his poor performance, made Mick look like a mega hero. Next to Kevin Magnussen he had a much harder time. And what doesn't help is that Mick's replacement Hülkenberg, half a generation older than Mick, subsequently washed the ears of the same Magnussen last season. If we now have to describe Magnussen as 'average', then Mick is less than mediocre. Mick seems self-conscious:
After working with Lewis and George for a year, I now know how high the bar is set and how far I can go. And I have no problem sharing my knowledge in the future. There is no reason to stay here, not race and lag behind everyone. I'd rather get started, race something and improve my skills. If in the end there is no way back to Formula 1, but that leads to a different career, then I am happy with that.
Mick Schumacher, real Germanic
So there are few pins to get in between. Or… is this precisely that lack of Kampfgeist that Mick's father did, because he didn't have the luxury of not having the sacred must? Let us know in the comments!
