AOn the sidelines of the Green Week agricultural trade fair in Berlin, farmers and other organizations demonstrated on Saturday for more sustainable agriculture. Representatives of the “We are fed up!” alliance handed over a protest note entitled “Stop injustice and hunger – strengthen farmers’ rights worldwide” to Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens). It also criticizes the federal government's overly timid approach to planning security and financing for converting animal husbandry to better conditions.
Özdemir accepted the demands of the demonstrators who had come to the exhibition center with several dozen tractors. An international conference of agricultural ministers chaired by Özdemir also met there on Saturday. The Green politician called for support to address issues that have been left behind for a long time – also as a consequence of the farmers' protests against the reduction of subsidies. “Help me get things passed by a majority,” he shouted. Özdemir pointed out that start-up financing for the conversion of animal husbandry and a state animal husbandry logo had already been decided.
The demands also include less bureaucracy
The “We’re fed up!” alliance is committed to more sustainable agriculture. The demonstration will take place under the motto “Good food needs a future – for GMO-free, farm-based and environmentally friendly agriculture!” The spectrum of participants ranges “from young to old”, and in addition to farmers, there are other groups such as beekeepers, said a spokeswoman. “Colourful agriculture”, less bureaucracy and strengthening democracy are also required.
A demonstration was scheduled to begin on Saturday afternoon at the SPD party headquarters in Berlin-Kreuzberg and move to the Chancellery.
