Wolff-Mercedes forward together
After 7 drivers' titles and 8 constructors' titles won between 2014 and 2021, two uncertain seasons on the part of Mercedes were enough to put Mercedes in the dock Toto Wolff, absolute director of the dominant Silver Arrows at the beginning of the hybrid era. Some press sources had in fact described the Austrian's position as shaky, especially if the 2024 world championship sees the Anglo-German team still far behind Red Bull.
Certainly a farewell from Wolff would not have been so simple, given that we are not talking about a simple team principal and CEO of the Mercedes F1 team, but also about a 33% co-owner of the team (the other two shareholders in equal measure are Mercedes AMG and Ineos).
During an interview given to the English of The Telegraph, Toto Wolff cleared the field of all doubts, stating that he had just signed a three-year renewalto remain in his current role until the end of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. The decision came at the end of a discussion with the other owners of the team.
Wolff's words
Wolff explained: “I think the most important thing is that the three of us (Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ola Kallenius, ed.) we trust each other. As a shareholder, we want the best possible return on investment, and that comes with wins. In the end the three of us decided and said: 'Let's continue'“. And he specified: “I've never had a performance clause. Either you trust each other or you don't. And we, as shareholders, are aligned. I am part of this team with different functions, being a co-shareholder and being part of the board of directors. These are things that will not change, whether you hold executive or non-executive roles. But I feel good, the risk for me is getting bored, not burning out.”
