The rain gardens designed on the section of the southern boulevard between Camino de Tiñosa and Ronda Sur, the second of phase 0 of the burying of the train tracks as they pass through Murcia, will stop the flooding that can occur in most of this area, cataloged as preferential flow by the cartography of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation.
This is one of the aspects detailed in the environmental report of the project, on public display since January 3, which covers an area of 3.2 hectares and a length of 1,735 meters. The general scheme is that of a large green path accompanied by a service road on its southern edge. The central green path makes pedestrian use compatible with a segregated two-way bicycle lane and the landscaping of the spaces. The budget for its execution is 5.7 million euros and the deadline is eleven months. The service road for road traffic will only have one direction and will be restricted to residents. The sidewalks on Orilla de la Vía street will be demolished to adapt them to accessibility criteria.
The environmental document highlights that the works include the implementation of sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) with the collection of runoff water, which also prevents soil erosion, through this type of gardens, and the use of the collected water for watering the plants. “They should be strategically located to capture runoff from nearby impervious surfaces such as pedestrian walkways.”
The action, which is located on the southeastern limit of the Infante Juan Manuel neighborhood, and between the districts of Los Dolores and San Benito-Progreso, will also convert it into a CO2 sink, as in phase 0.1, and in The report estimates that it will absorb 3,854 tons over 30 years.
The document gives a warning when selecting the type of green mass. “In the case of trees and plant material, we face a more serious problem: the selection and placement of green masses must be correctly studied due to the difficulty of finding vegetal soil and its correct root development being complicated.”
