DThe French government of Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne has resigned. The Elysée Palace in Paris announced this on Monday. President Emmanuel Macron was expected to reorganize the government after the massively tightened immigration law was recently passed in a shake-up.
Borne has held the government chairmanship since May 2022. The dispute over the law passed in mid-December had put Macron under pressure; 20 MPs from Macron's ranks voted against and 17 abstained. Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau subsequently resigned.
Macron now accepted the government's resignation and thanked the previous prime minister “from the bottom of his heart” for her “exemplary” work in the service of the country.
Macron is expected to name a successor shortly. The favorite is 34-year-old Education Minister Gabriel Attal, who would become France's youngest head of government. The aspiring politician is a close confidante of Macron and has already held several positions in the government.
