The question of whether virtual rape is “really rape” dates back at least to 1993when the Village Voice published an article by Julian Dibbell on “a rape in cyberspace“. Dibbell's article reported how the people behind the avatars, sexually assaulted in a virtual community, experienced emotions similar to those of victims of physical rape. As reported by “Il Messaggero”, the British Home Secretary, James Cleverlystated that “it is easy to dismiss this incident as if it were not real, but the predominant characteristic of these virtual spaces is precisely that of being incredibly realistic and engaging”.
