The Fish Farms and Marine Life Research Department in Cyprus stated that 6 of the so-called beaked whales were found dead on Friday, while 4 whales were found, 3 of which were alive, on Thursday.
The administration said in a statement that the three live whales found Thursday have been returned to the sea.
She added that it was not clear whether the group of dead whales found on Friday included whales that were found on Thursday and returned to the sea.
“These animals have an echolocation system that is affected by marine noise,” Yiannis Ioannou of the Fish Farms and Marine Life Research Department told Sigma TV.
The whales were found in a relatively small part of the northern coast of Cyprus, which is under the control of the island’s internationally recognized government.
The separatist Turkish state of Cyprus controls a longer part of this coast.
The people on the island of Cyprus felt the violent earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, killing tens of thousands.
