The Cuevas de Reyllo champion prepares in double training sessions to compete in the Diamond League
Mariano García, flamboyant European champion in the open air of 800 meters, does not rest. The athlete from Cuevas de Reyllo arrived in Fuente Álamo late last Monday and, after celebrating his triumph at the Olympiastadion in Munich with his team, he began to prepare his next appointment. It will be on September 2 in Brussels, on the penultimate day of the 2022 Diamond League. To arrive in the best possible shape, the Murcian has skipped tomorrow’s appointment in Lausanne and has scheduled double training sessions.
On June 5, in the fourth round of the Diamond calendar this year, Mariano García finished eleventh in the 800 meter test, in a race with a high level of participants. He achieved a time of 1.48.48, which was then his best mark of the year, although far from the one achieved on Sunday in the Bavarian capital (1.44.85).
Mariano, who missed the Olympic Games last year due to appendicitis, wants to take advantage of the opportunities that arise to go out on the track to run and continue training hard.
The Diamond League is an annual athletics event that debuted in 2010. It is organized by World Athletics and replaced the IAAF Golden League, which was held from 1998 to 2009. The Diamond League is made up of the 15 meetings of major athletics in various parts of the world.
Miguel Ángel López, the other Murcian athlete who won the gold medal at the European Championships in Munich, has already concluded the season, according to a spokesperson for the Murcian Athletics Federation.
Tribute to Katir in Mula
On the other hand, Moha Katir, silver medalist in Munich in the 5,000 meter test, will be honored tomorrow in Mula. It is the second act of recognition for the Muleño middle-distance runner in just over a month, after the bronze that he won in the 1,500-meter race obtained at the World Championships in Eugene (Oregon – United States), in which he promised “another medal, but of different metal, better than the one I offer today to my people». Mo kept his word.
These days Katir has been enjoying his new European medal with his family and close friends and after the tribute he will receive tomorrow he will travel to Morocco to visit one of his grandparents.
