Sony announced its intention to accelerate the initiative by 10 years Road to Zero company, i.e. the plan to achieve carbon neutrality (zero emissions).
The Road to Zero plan was first conceived in 2010, when Sony announced it as “a long-term global environmental plan … to achieve a sustainable society by achieving zero environmental impact throughout the lifecycle of Sony’s products and businesses“Originally, this carbon neutrality target was set for 2050. However, the company has now shared a statement revealing that the target will need to be met in 2040.
“Sony will accelerate its carbon neutrality target, meaning virtually zero greenhouse gas emissions, from 2050 to 2040. In particular, Sony intends to make direct and indirect emissions from its operations carbon neutral by 2030, and by 2040, Sony will also target other emissions from phases such as products, supply chains and logistics, aiming for net zero emissions in all areas.“.
In addition to shifting the goals of this initiative, Sony has also adjusted its plans to reach 100% renewable electricity used on its sites within 10 years, with the new target now set at 2030.
Sony hopes to achieve these goals by installing solar energy equipment on its sites, reducing the overall energy consumption for its products, encouraging its business partners to save energy and manage emissions.
Sony also made headlines recently after a report alleging that the company is currently refusing to approve any statements its PlayStation studios may want to make on the subject of abortion rights.
Prior to this report, Jim Ryan caused a sensation when he emailed his staff asking them to “respect differences of opinion” about abortion rights.
However, despite Ryan’s demands, Bungie, the soon-to-be-owned studio of Sony, has remained adamant that it will stand up for what it believes is right.
