A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has hit the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Philippines, the USGS has found. The quake struck at a depth of 70 kilometers (43 miles) about 100 kilometers southeast of Sarangani province, the USGS said. The quake did not trigger a tsunami warning, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System said.
This earthquake follows a series of powerful earthquakes and aftershocks off the southern island of Mindanao in early December, after a very strong magnitude 7.6 earthquake at sea briefly triggered a tsunami warning. At least three people were killed and 17 injured. A 5.7 magnitude earthquake then shook Manila, the capital of the Philippines, sending residents into the streets. Earthquakes are very common in the Philippines, an archipelago located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity that extends from Japan to the Pacific via Southeast Asia.
