Euro NCAP has released the results of its first crash tests carried out during 2022, and there is good news for manufacturers who have entrusted their cars to the independent organization that carries out these delicate crash tests. Five stars were awarded to Renault Megane E-Tech, Volkswagen Polo and Taigo and Lexus NX. While the BMW 2 Series Coupe remained at four stars.
According to Euro NCAP reports on the basis of the tests carried out, “Volkswagen gave the popular Polo a solid makeover, which, in addition to the extra styling, above all added more technology“. Thanks to the addition of new central airbags and revamped crash prevention systems, the Polo achieved top marks. Maximum score also for Renault Megane E-Tech, which we talked about here:
There Lexus NX, available as a regular and plug-in hybrid, shares the same platform as its parent company Toyota’s RAV4. While the car performed well in testing and scored enough points to qualify for 5 stars, “Lexus engineers did not provide all the technical information normally shared with Euro NCAP, leaving an impression of carelessness that is atypical for a Toyota brand“.
The tests on the BMW 2 Series Coupe showed that the car offers good impact protection and satisfactory protection for vulnerable road users. The autonomous emergency braking system performed adequately in simpler test scenarios, involving other cars and pedestrians, but it appeared to be limited in more challenging scenarios such as cycling through.
Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen said: “For twenty-five years, Euro NCAP has been setting the standard for automotive safety. The next ten will bring enormous challenges, with assisted and automated driving at the forefront of future changes. Our focus on ADAS – advanced driver assistance systems – over the past decade makes us well positioned to evaluate these new aspects of vehicle technology, and to continue to provide key information to future buyers.“.
