49 migrants were killed in a traffic accident between two trucks in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Thursday, according to news reports.
The victims died when the trailer of one of the two trucks involved in the accident in Chiapa de Corzo overturned.
The Civil Defense Agency of Chiapas said that, according to preliminary information from the scene, 58 other people were injured in the accident.
“Solidarity with the victims of the accident,” Chiapas Governor Rutilio Escandon wrote in a tweet on Twitter.
He said that he instructed the rescue crews to pay attention immediately and provide assistance to the injured, and pledged to investigate the accident and reveal those responsible.
Hundreds of thousands of immigrants attempt to reach the United States through Mexico each year. The majority come from Mexico or one of the Central American countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
