Ciudad Juarez.- In Ciudad Juárez, during the period between January and August 2024, a total of 355 work permits for adolescents were authorized by the State Government’s Secretariat of Labor and Social Security, reported Ana Antillón, liaison for the agency.
Most of these permits were issued to teenagers employed in restaurant chains. This figure reflects the volume of permits processed under the regulations established by the Federal Labor Law (LFT), which stipulates a series of specific conditions and restrictions for minors entering the labor market, the state official said.
“The LFT stipulates a series of specific restrictions for adolescent workers with the aim of protecting their well-being and guaranteeing an adequate working environment,” he added.
He added that among the most notable restrictions is the prohibition of adolescents working after 10 p.m.
This measure aims to ensure that young people’s night-time rest, which is essential for their physical and mental development, is not affected.
“Teenagers cannot work in places where open-top alcoholic beverages are sold, a regulation designed to prevent the exposure of young people to environments that could be inappropriate or dangerous,” says the LFT.
Another important restriction states that minors should not be exposed to extreme temperatures, including both extreme heat and extreme cold, to protect their health.
As for specific activities that teenagers are prohibited from participating in, the law also includes restrictions against working in fields and operating heavy machinery.
These limitations are intended to avoid risks associated with tasks that may be physically demanding or dangerous.
Adolescents are also prohibited from working in activities related to the safekeeping of valuables, which could involve high-risk situations.
Supervise work
To ensure that these regulations are complied with, monitoring procedures have been established through follow-up inspections.
“These inspections are carried out to verify that workplaces comply with legal provisions and to ensure that the permits granted are used in accordance with established regulations,” said the state official.
“The main focus of these inspections is on restaurant chains, which represent a significant sector in the local economy and employ a considerable number of teenagers,” he added.
Supervision in these establishments is to ensure that work practices comply with the law and to prevent possible violations that may jeopardize the safety and rights of young workers.
“Through a system of inspections and monitoring, we seek to ensure compliance with these standards, especially in key sectors such as restaurant chains, where the presence of young workers is notable,” concluded Antillón.
