The National Institute of Migration (INM) reported this Thursday the discovery of 209 migrants from Central and South America in an abandoned trailer on a highway near the town of Nuevo Teapa, in the state of Veracruz (east).

Among the migrants were found on Wednesday night 161 adults from Guatemala; 6 from Honduras and El Salvador, respectively; and 5 from Ecuador, according to a statement from the INM.
Of these, 23 people traveled in nine family units and 25 minors from Guatemala traveled alone, who remained under the guardianship of the state’s Comprehensive Development System for the Family (DIF).

One of the people, who presented symptoms of suffocation, she was taken to a nearby hospital.
Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, the document says, agents from the institution and the National Guard located the vehicle, from inside which cries for help were heard from the migrants, who were in overcrowded conditions.
“Immediately, one of the doors was opened, from which adult women and men began to appear, as well as minors who asked to leave to get air and water,” the INM explained.

The trailer box in which they were, detailed the institute, has tubular structures and planks to condition a second floor “in order to transport a greater number of foreign migrants.”
The region is experiencing a record migratory flow, with 2.76 million undocumented immigrants detained at the United States border with Mexico in fiscal year 2022.
In addition, according to Mexican civil organizations, 2022 was the most tragic year for migrants in Mexico, as some 900 died trying to cross without documents from the country to the United States.
