The city besieged by Russia expected this Monday the arrival of 90 tons of food and medicine
A glimmer of hope is born in the Ukrainian city of Mariúpol, located on the Sea of Azov, the most affected by the fire of its batteries and the Donetsk rebels. It has been besieged by Russian troops for more than two weeks. The bombs do not stop and the inhabitants are on the verge of despair. Incommunicado, deprived of water, gas and electricity, as well as food and medicine shortages. Getting out of there is the desire of the locals and this Monday, finally, a humanitarian corridor was opened for the first time in the city, thanks to which a caravan of 160 private vehicles managed to get out, said the City Council.
The civilians, who until Monday had not been able to escape from the town, passed through the town of Melekine, Portovske, Mangush and Berdyansk to finally head towards Zaporizhia. “From now on, passing the checkpoints is not a problem,” announced the adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, Petro Andryushchenko, who, however, pointed out that they cannot officially guarantee security in the evacuation corridor, “but this it is the only broker that is officially approved and actually works today.”
Meanwhile, this Monday the besieged city expected to receive its first humanitarian aid consisting of some 90 tons of food and medicine. The package was scheduled to arrive last Saturday, but the convoy had to turn around due to Russian troops.
2,500 dead
The situation in the city is “apocalyptic”, denounced the Red Cross. About a hundred bombs have already fallen in Mariúpol – only from Saturday to Sunday there were twenty-two – and more than 2,500 inhabitants have already lost their lives, according to local authorities. “Each bombardment brings terrible destruction and takes away the main thing that exists: the lives of peaceful residents,” they expressed from the Consistory, which recalled over the weekend that there were at least 400,000 people blocked in the city. In a new attempt to stop the war, the Pope urged on Sunday to stop the “massacre” in this “martyr city.”
On the other hand, the Ukrainian authorities announced on Monday the opening of ten humanitarian corridors in kyiv and Lugansk to favor the evacuation of civilians in the face of the military offensive by the Kremlin forces.
