The Netherlands currently has 27,000 places for reception, of which 17,000 places have been filled. That is what State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum) said just after the Council of Ministers.
The cabinet is taking into account that thousands of Ukrainians will have to be accommodated in the coming months. Van der Burg is counting on a ‘prolonged situation in which the reception of people from Ukraine will increase considerably’. According to him, the number of refugees who come forward is ‘steadily’ increasing.
Government buildings are therefore being prepared to absorb this flow, where other asylum seekers are also received. Among other things, the dome prison in Breda is a place that has been designated.
According to Minister De Jonge (Wonen), the cabinet must also guard against displacement in the housing market in the longer term. Many Dutch people are still waiting for a house. If Ukrainians are given priority, that will become an even bigger problem. De Jonge therefore says that a special organization is being set up to look at the situation together. For example, very large reception areas, almost villages, are also being considered.
