Militants have killed at least 14 civilians and kidnapped more than a dozen others in an attack in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a witness and a local human rights group said on Wednesday.
An army spokesman confirmed the attack, which took place in Ituri province on Tuesday evening, blaming the attack on a group linked to the terrorist organization Daesh.
Spokesman Anthony Mwalochai said the army killed five terrorists and rescued a five-year-old girl who had been kidnapped. He did not say how many civilians were killed.
Gilbert Sivamuenda, head of a local human rights group, put the death toll in Biakato at 16, including 14 civilians and two attackers.
Sivamuenda added that about 15 farmers are still missing, as well as several others who could not be found and are not answering calls.
