This week the teams that will attend the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which will be held in little more than one calendar year. These are 10 great national teams that I ever know they missed one of these appointments:
The brand new European champion came before one of the great hits in the history of the national teams. They could not enter the World Cup in Russia because they fell against Sweden in the play-off (1-0 and 1-1). The previous time had been in 1958, more than half a century before.
A Clockwork Orange has been runner-up in the world 3 times, the last against Spain in 2010 (1-0). Despite his great footballing level, in the last 40 years he has been absent in several World Cup events: Spain 1982, Mexico 1986, Korea and Japan 2002 and the last time, in Russia 2018.
The celestial was the first champion in history, in 1930, and then she would star in the historic Maracanazo in 1950. However, they could not qualify for Sweden 1958. Years later they would go into a spin and lost 3 World Cups out of 4: United States 1994, France 1998 and Germany 2006.
The Spanish team is one of those that this week is playing for life, against Sweden and Greece, to be able to be in Qatar. At the moment it has gone uninterruptedly since 1978. Before it was lost those of Switzerland 1954, Sweden 1958, Mexico 1970 and Germany 1974.
The English team has touched this summer the first European Championship in its history. The World Cup they did, in 1966 at home. Later they would be lost the one of Germany 1974, the one of Argentina 1978 and the one of the United States 1994.
Argentina is one of the meccas of soccer. The albiceleste has won the Cup twice and has reached another two finals. Only one edition was lost, that of 1970 in Mexico. Peru was his executioner.
Les Bleus are still the most powerful team in the world despite the blow in the last European Championship. Not in vain, they are the current champions of the World Cup. However, they had a much tougher time. In fact, no more and no less than 6 World Cups have been lost: Brazil 1950, Chile 1962, Mexico 1970, Germany 1974, Italy 1990 and the United States 1994.
The Red Devils are still the No. 1 pick in the world. The best generation of footballers in its history is starting to get older. In the past, it was not as common to see Belgium at the World Cups as it is now. In fact, up to 7 have been lost: Sweden 1958, Chile 1962, England 1966, Germany 1974, Argentina 1978, Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010.
The history of Portugal is much more ‘modern’ on a footballing level. In fact, although they have not missed a date since Korea and Japan 2002, until then they were not a regular at these tournaments at all. They had only been in England in 1966, with the great Eusebio, and in Mexico in 1986.
The Nordics will be, together with Greece, one of the two teams that will play their access to Qatar against Spain. The match between La Roja and Ibrahimovic’s on Sunday points to crucial. They have not been to 8 World Cups: Switzerland 1954, Chile 1962, England 1966, Spain 1982, Mexico 1986, France 1998, South Africa 2010 or Brazil 2014.
