Zelensky stated during a virtual conference of G7 leaders, “Russia hopes for only one thing: that the unity of the free world will collapse next year. Russia believes that America and Europe will show weakness and end their support for Ukraine at the appropriate level.”
While he acknowledged that Russian forces were launching attacks on the front, Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian soldiers were “resisting the attacks.”
He added: “We are holding areas in several directions on the front line and we are preparing for the next stages.”
After the failure of the major counterattack launched by the Ukrainian army in the summer, which was unable to penetrate the Russian defenses, Russian forces regained the initiative, especially in Advivka, the industrial city in the east, which they are trying to encircle.
Western military and financial aid to Ukraine, which is essential to Kiev’s war effort, has come into increasing doubt due to political disagreements in the United States as well as in Europe.
Thus, Zelensky considered, on Wednesday, that his country must “win the stimulus battle” at home as well as abroad. “The free world has a vital need to preserve its unity,” he told the G7.
He also expressed his hope that the European Union would fulfill its “promise to Ukraine,” whose desire to join the Union will be discussed, especially during the mid-December summit.
On Tuesday evening, Zelensky canceled his scheduled speech before the US Congress, where tense negotiations were taking place regarding continued aid to Ukraine, which raised a major surprise.
