The award was presented to him by the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondowho also took advantage of the event to defend key initiatives regarding equality and protection against sexist violence. Zapatero stressed that individualism has no place in the socialist project, advocating collective construction and solidarity as the foundations of a country and a party with a purpose. “Loyalty must be the rule in the PSOE,” he emphasized, urging militants to remain united in the face of challenges.
The former president also highlighted the crucial role of women in politics and in his own government, recognizing that the female ministers in his cabinet demonstrated greater effectiveness than their male colleagues. “Feminism has only just begun,” she stated, encouraging continued progress in equality.
Zapatero did not miss the opportunity to criticize reactionary attitudes of the extreme rightcalling his stance toward women “cowardice.” In addition, he regretted the xenophobic speeches of figures like Elon Musk, whom he accused of attacking the most vulnerable.
He also had words of support for the victims of the recent torrential rains that affected the Valencian Community, trusting that help to those affected will be a government priority for the remainder of the legislature.
In addition to Zapatero, Charo Velasco, former socialist spokesperson in the Ponferrada City Council, was awarded for her bravery in the Nevenka case, and Amparo Rubiales, a historical reference for socialist feminism in Seville.
