TV Azteca is one of the most important companies in telecommunications from Mexico. However, it is always looking to expand its reach. With the 2026 World Cup just a few years away, it has been revealed that this company has made a breakthrough to experiment with the 5G band, in order to reach many more users, who could enjoy this programming from their cell phones without spending data.
According to El Economista, TV Azteca has achieved a agreement with the Federal Telecommunications Institute, with which it will be able to use 5G to distribute audiovisual content at high speed. with 8K transmission quality and extensive coverage over the entire territory of Mexico City, from an antenna that will soon be located in the peaks of Ajusco. This is what was mentioned about it:
“[TV Azteca podrá hacer uso de la banda ancha para la] broadcast or unidirectional multicast transmission of digital audiovisual content and auxiliary data with great coverage and through fifth generation mobile technology, taking advantage of the advantages such as low latency and stability.
Along with this, it has been revealed that the television station has to present a results report within a maximum of 30 calendar days at the end of the term of the concession, that is, on March 3, 2025. One of the options that would be possible through this concession, would be the transmission of TV Azteca programs on mobile devices, including tablets, without spending datathanks to 5G that uses the 600 MHz band. This is what Guillermo Salomón, executive director of digital transformation for businesses at the firm Beyond Technology, commented on the matter:
“These cell phone frequencies are very low, but they are brutally better for coverage, carrying the signal up to 26, 28 or even 30 kilometers away and it is because of that great range, since many people watch television through cell phones, that they want them. the television stations and the user would not be opening a data session while on the move, it is enough for the phone to have signal reception to receive this 5G Broadcast. This technology is an advantage because the user does not consume their mobile data and it is an advantage for television stations to reach more customers (…) 5G can allow television stations to transform their business.”
With the 2026 World Cup just a few years away, This is the perfect time to test this technology, and if the result is positive, it is likely that in the future being able to watch television from your cell phone without consuming data will be a daily occurrence for many.
