Yolanda Díaz, second vice president and Minister of Labor, has recognized that the coalition government of which she is a part is not doing enough to solve the housing problem in Spain.
In statements to ‘La Hora de la 1’, TVEDíaz has been forceful in responding that the Executive has not put all its efforts into reducing the cost of rental housing, one of the main concerns: “I don’t think so“.
In parallel, Díaz has assured that the Government partners have “a shared diagnosis.” This diagnosis is “that the main problem, the main factor of inequality in Spain is called ‘housing’“.
The minister highlighted that the housing model has not only “broken the social elevator”, it has also caused that in Spain there is no “vital project for youth”.
A problem that, Díaz has clarified, not only affects young people and is already transversal: “Not only young people, it is that a widow who has a pension of 600 euros cannot live on rent. Therefore, it is a broken model of society. “.
The Young Rental Bonus will not meet expectations
The pressure on the Government due to the high price of rents and the absence of responses at the state level (housing powers do not belong to the State) was reflected in a special way in the demonstration held in Madrid in mid-October and which has found a following in other cities such as, for example, Valencia.
In response to the demonstration in Madrid, the Government announced the return of the Young Rental Bonus, which would however have a very limited impact: only 6% of rentals are less than 600 euros and only 31% of rentals offered have a price less than 900 euros.
A measure that has not generated great enthusiasm in Sumar, a partner in the PSOE Government and formation led by Díaz. In fact, Iñigo Errejón referred to the Young Rental Bonus as “a huge amount of public money for landlords”.
