Aden (Al-Ittihad)
The Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council renewed its emphasis on the necessity of stopping the Houthi escalation as a basic condition for any political process, noting that the chances for peace have diminished in light of the Houthi group’s intransigence and insistence on continuing the war, mainly targeting the Yemeni people and their food security.
This came during a reception by a member of the Presidential Command Council, Major General Aidaroos Qasim Al-Zubaidi, at the presidential palace in the temporary capital, Aden, yesterday, with the head of the European Union delegation in Yemen, Gabriel Munera Viñales, and the ambassadors of France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
The meeting reviewed the repercussions of the economic crisis that Yemen is experiencing as a result of the continued cessation of oil and gas exports, and the human suffering experienced by Yemeni citizens in Aden and other governorates due to the lack of electricity and water supplies, and the delayed disbursement of salaries. In this regard, Major General Al-Zubaidi called on friends in the European Union and donor countries to strengthen their humanitarian support provided to Yemen in order to improve the economic situation, stop the collapse of the local currency, and help the government assume its responsibilities towards the population.
The meeting also discussed the recent measures taken by the leadership of the Central Bank to stop “Houthi tampering with the Yemeni economy.” In this regard, Major General Al-Zubaidi reaffirmed the support of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government for these measures, as they are the best way to force the Houthi group to stop the war and accept the path of peace.
The meeting touched on the latest developments related to the peace process led by the United Nations to end the conflict and bring peace to Yemen, the UN road map and its consequences in light of the continued Houthi escalation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab, and the group’s ongoing mobilization process on the Al-Dhalea, Karsh, Shabwa and Marib fronts.
For their part, both the Head of the European Union Mission and the accompanying ambassadors affirmed their countries’ positions in support of the Presidential Command Council, its cohesion and unity of position, and their support for the efforts made to alleviate the humanitarian situation, stop the economic collapse and provide basic services to Yemeni citizens, most notably water and electricity.
